CHAPTER SIX

Sarah gasped, turned around to find Karla with Andrea’s mother, Jenny, and said, “Oh, hey, Mom, I was looking for you.”

“You missed the eulogy. I waited for you at the church, but you didn’t show up, so I came with Jenny,” Karla said with a smile.

“Sarah! Sarah! Where were you?” Andrea ran up to her with Fluffy beside her, pacing afterward.

“I was watching the men putting the casket in the grave. Next thing I know, you’re gone. Girl, you are going to give me a heart attack. Let me know when you are up to something,” Andrea said as she gasped for air from all that running.

“Up to something?” Karla asked with curiosity.

“Yeah, what she means is not to disappear suddenly. I came to look for you, so she thought I ran off,” Sarah said with a smirk. Before Karla could say anything back, Sarah’s phone rang. She looked at the screen and read Emma, it was finally time. “Mom, I’ll see you home. Bye,” Sarah and Andrea waved goodbye as Sarah picked up her phone.

“Hello?” Sarah said with a shaky voice.

“Hello? Sarah, I’m ready to meet you at the cafe you mentioned. Drop me the location, and I’ll see you in a while,” Emma said in a rush.

“Yeah, sounds good. I’ll send you the location. Bye,” Sarah said and hung up.

She quickly sent her Mrs. Thompson’s Cafe location and told Andrea and Fluffy, “Let’s head back to the bookshop.”

They got into the truck and passed the cemetery toward the cafe shop. They reached there in just two minutes. Everything in Holbrook was within walking distance — from the food markets, schools, and police stations. Sarah was so glad she had moved to Holbrook from that crazy, loud, crowded New York City. This was the best decision her mom had ever made.

They stormed into Mrs. Thompson’s Cafe and looked around for Emma.

“Good afternoon, young ladies. What can I get for you?” Mrs. Thompson asked in her sweet, kind voice.

“Good afternoon, Mrs. Thompson. Three French vanilla, please. Did anyone else come here today?” Sarah asked curiously.

“Well, of course, people of all ages come to enjoy their coffee,” Mrs. Thompson chuckled, “Who are you asking in particular?”

“A lady in her twenties, maybe,” Sarah said.

“I’m sorry darling, more than ten people had come around the same age, but I won’t be able to tell you who was who. My brain is too old for that,” Mrs. Thompson laughed.

“That’s fine. Thank you, Mrs. Thompson. We’ll wait for our French vanilla by the table,” Sarah said as she walked to the table by the window. The window was her favorite place to drink coffee — anywhere, as long as she sat by the window and watched the world full of mystery outside.

“Do you think she will come?” Andrea asked with concern.

“What do you mean? She called us to meet, and she should be here by now. I’m sure she won’t ditch us,” Sarah explained.

Just then, the door jingled, and a beautiful lady in a lovely white dress covered in pretty purple roses walked in, holding her turquoise purse.
